Educational Choices
As we’ve said before, there is no one model for school choice. In fact, school choice should be about creating many different options for learning- more about educational choices, not just school choices. We know that one-size doesn’t fit all, so we should create an environment that fosters the development and proliferation of many different educational models and choices.
North Carolina is embracing this idea, having started a statewide “Virtual Public School Program.” This allows students in middle and high school to enroll in online courses, recover missing credits, earn college-level credit or even graduate early.
North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson supports the program, telling the News and Observer:
“A student’s address does not determine a student’s access,” Atkinson said. “Just like we have social networks, we need schools to be a part of a student’s social network. This is just one step in the progression of redefining the place called school.”
We agree and believe that more educational choices is a positive step for students and families.
